Lake Erie Wing Watch (LEWW) is
a unique committee dedicated to promoting birding in Erie, Lorain and
Ottawa counties in Ohio.
The Lake Erie Wing Watch (LEWW)
areas
are home to more than 300 bird species, including majestic bald eagles,
colorful migratory warblers, and graceful great blue herons. Add an
abundance of other wildlife, from the famous walleye to the lesser-known
melanistic garter snake. Plus the region has many varieties of plant life,
without which the entire ecological system of Lake Erie would change.
Located between Oak Harbor, OH
to the west and Lorain, OH to the east, this waterfront region on the
southern shore of Lake Erie includes marshlands,
deep forests, natural springs, limestone quarries, rocky shorelines, and
the only undeveloped natural estuary on the Great Lakes.
Each year, LEWW hosts an annual birding event called Lake Erie Wing Watch
Weekend. The location of the event is rotated between the
representative counties: Erie, Lorain & Ottawa. Plan to join us for this educational, yet fun event.
Bird
Watching Tips
· Always follow designated trails and paths. Stay clear of private
property.
· Never remove items from natural areas. Leave flowers, shells,
nuts, and animals for others to enjoy.
· Please stay a considerable distance from nests so animal
parents can find food and care for their young.
· Never knowingly disturb wildlife by getting too close,
pointing, moving abruptly, or speaking loudly.
· Avoid chasing or repeatedly flushing birds.
· Obey state regulations. You will be prosecuted for venturing
beyond signs posted "Endangered Species Nesting Area Trespassing
Unlawful."
· Migratory birds need restful areas to refuel before continuing
their journeys. Keep disturbances to a minimum. International treaty, as
well as state and federal laws, protect all migratory birds.
· Not everyone is an early riser. Being quiet is simple
courtesy. In residential areas, keep voices low and vehicle noise to a
minimum before 9 a.m.
· Be careful not to point optics toward people or houses.
· Express gratitude to individuals and businesses that go out of
their way to accommodate your birding interests or needs.
· Wear binoculars everywhere. It is the best way to share the
economic importance of bird watching.
